چکیده

Investigators with an operant conditioning orientation have produced evidence that conditioning can occur without awareness, whereas workers from a cognitive learning theory point of view, employing somewhat different experimetnal procedures, have obtained results supporting the hypothesis that conditioning only occurs in subjects who become aware of the response-reinforcement contingency. Moreover, cognitive theorists maintain that increments in conditioning perform ance occur only after awareness. The theory of Postman and Sassenrath, on the other hand, holds that some conditioning occurs prior to aware ness and that awareness is both a result of past improvement and a condition of further improvement in conditioning performance. Im portant in generalizing about the role of awareness in conditioning is the fact that the present study was uniquely different from other studies of awareness in several ways. The reinforced response class was a physical one rather than a verbal one and involved the behavior of two individuals instead of one, candy instead of a verbal stimulus was used as the reinforcer, the experimental nature of the study was not apparent to the subjects, who were children rather than adults, and most importantly, the experimental design was unique among studies of awareness in providing a sensitive measure of the temporal relation ship of awareness to conditioning rate. The cooperative response was defined according to a four-dimensional scheme involving the sequential vs. non-sequential, latency, duration, and topography dimensions of the

Operant conditioning of the skin resistance response with different intensities of light flashes

Operant conditioning of the skin resistance response was obtained using a dim flash of white light as the reinforcing stimulus. The results confirm earlier reports using similar procedures from another laboratory, show no differential effect of the illuminance of a reinforcing light, and contrast sharply with a study which failed to replicate previous studies using light flashes as the reinforc...

Treatment of Children’s Aggression by Behavioral Therapy Techniques

Objective: The present study aims at investigating the effects of behavioral therapy techniques through operant conditioning and observational learning on children’s aggression aged 4-6 years.  Methods: To this end, a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study with two experimental groups and a control group was designed. We used non-probability purposive sampling method to select 45...

Operant conditioning of head-waving in Aplysia. I. Identified muscles involved in the operant response.

A basic goal in the neurosciences is to understand the cellular mechanisms underlying associative learning. The 2 major forms of associative learning are classical conditioning and operant conditioning. In recent years considerable progress has been made towards a cellular analysis of classical conditioning in a number of different preparations. In contrast, the cellular mechanisms underlying o...

Cooperation in the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma Is Learned by Operant Conditioning Mechanisms

The prisoner's dilemma (PD) is the leading metaphor for the evolution of cooperative behavior in populations of selfish agents. Although cooperation in the iterated prisoner's dilemma (IPD) has been studied for over twenty years, most of this research has been focused on strategies that involve nonlearned behavior. Another approach is to suppose that players' selection of the preferred reply mi...

Associative Learning: Pavlovian Conditioning without Awareness

Can Pavlovian conditioning occur outside of awareness? Yes, according to a new study showing that, under a particular set of circumstances, visual stimuli can become associated with aversive outcomes without participants ever seeing the stimuli.
